Begin your 9-day Ghana vacation with a sightseeing tour of Accra. Discover the history of Ghana’s capital with stops at Black Star Gate, James Town, Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Independence Square, and the National Museum of Ghana.
Before driving north toward the Ashanti region, visit the W.E.B. DuBois Center, the home and final resting place of Dr. W.E.B. DuBois. The journey continues through the beautiful Akuapem range and then to the Aburi Botanical Gardens and the Aburi Craft Village.
Tour the city of Kumasi, first heading to the Manhyia Palace, home of the Asantehene, King of the Ashanti’s and ruler of the Asanteman Kingdom. Continue to then visit the National Cultural Centre, one of the oldest suburbs of Kumasi near Bantama and then stop at the Kejetia market which is reported to be the largest outdoor market in West Africa. End the day with a stop at the Okomfo Anokye sword found in the grounds of the Okomfo Anokye teaching hospital in Kumasi.
Visit the last material remains of the great Asante Empire at the Ancient Kente and Adinkra Villages, Ashanti Traditional House and Sakoban Krofrom.
Continue South to Cape Coast for an emotional stop at Assin Manso, a prominent town along the enslaved African trade route where so many African ancestors from the northern parts of Ghana, Burkina Faso and Niger were marched bare foot in shackles heading towards the coast. The town surrounds the Ndonkor Nsuo (Slave River). This river is where enslaved Africans were checked for fitness and bathed before being transported to Cape Coast for shipment to the Americas.
The afternoon is dedicated to honoring ancestors at arguably the most significant edifice remaining along the West African coastline. Cape Coast Castle is an emotional, thought provoking monument to a harrowing period in Ghana's history.
Experience Africa’s world−famous rainforest canopy walkway at Kakum National Park...a semi−deciduous upper guinea rainforest. The walkway consists of 7 bridges, attached to 7 emerging trees, 40 metres above the rainforest floor.
On the way back to Accra, pass through the fishing town of Elmina and visit the Castle of St. George, the oldest extant colonial building in sub−Saharan Africa, dating from 1482. This castle is steeped in history and played a prominent part during the tragic, transatlantic slave trade era. This informative museum has been formally designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO.
